Pilates and Osteoporosis

February 4th, 2008, 12:15 pm · 1 Comment · posted by zeena

I just came back from a Pilates conference where we discussed many of the benefits of Pilates for different special populations. One of the most interesting discussions was on people with Osteoporosis, a growing problem especially among women over the age of 50. The danger with exercise in people with Osteoporosis is that particular movements can cause fractures in the spine. However with proper movement we can actually strengthen the bones and avoid this (and other injuries).

Depending on the severity and location of the Osteoporosis, many movements can be contraindicated, the most important of which is forward flexion of the spine. This means any kid of “crunch” where the head and chest is lifted off the floor. Movements like this can add pressure to the vertebre adding risk to spinal fractures. So what then can we do to strengthen the abdominals in order to protect the spine? Pilates offers plenty of core exercises that will work these muscles without placing the body in this forward flexed position. These exercises are usually not found in a “mat” Pilates class but best done in private sessions on the equipment where modifications and resistance can be added. Privates sessions with a certified, knowledgable intructor is best for people with diagnosed Osteoporosis. I STRONGLY suggest that anyone with diagnosed Osteoporosis should stay away from any mat Pilates class as most movements require spinal flexion.

It’s important with people with this disease to exercise properly, and Pilates can offer solutions to keep the bones, muscles and spine STRONG.
